Internet Sharing is certainly technically possible on CWOF networks.

Efforts are currently underway to work on mirroring sites into the Wireless side of current CWOF compliant Networks. Such sites are considered to be essential to progressing Community Wireless efforts or generally essential information web sites.

For Example ;

The Mesh - Currently available internally on Darwinmesh @ the-mesh.darwinmesh
Bureau of Meteorology Territory Weather Updates and current Darwin Radar Maps
James Cook University Metsat 3 hourly Satellite Weather Photos
Wikipedia Encyclopedia
Debian and Ubuntu Sources

Whilst Internet sharing is technically possible there are a few considerations that need to be made.

Firstly the Community Wireless Open Framework was never built to replace the commercial role of Internet Service Providers. Unfortunately throughout the short history of Community Wireless Networks many people have mistaken Community Wireless for a Commercial Internet substitute. This is not the case !

Guaranteed uptime, service levels and fault resolution times are not available on CWOF Networks. Despite the utmost effort to provide a resilient, stable and quick fault resolving system no "Guarantees" can be made on Community Networks. Users need to be cognisant of the fact that due to minimum resources available outages can and do happen as much as we don't like it. As a consequence of this the CWOF is NOT recommended for Commercial Internet solutions or requirements. Although many of the technologies and strategies employed can be used we cannot recommend strongly enough the use of Commercial Vendors to provide such a service if that is a requirement. A quick search of www.google.com.au can find a number of Wireless Internet Service Providers.

Members may share Internet with each other however the maintenance of such is not supported at the Network or CWOF level and all provision is subject both to individual arrangements and provided it does not contravene the applicable ISP usage agreements.

Sale of bandwidth (or commercial wireless usage) is subject to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Telecommunications Act 1997. More information is availabe on their WLAN Fact Sheet. Noting the "waived" carrier licence model that CWOF Networks adhere to Charging or Bartering for Internet Bandwidth or Services should not be conducted by any person/persons connected to CWOF Networks

Users also need to be aware of possible bandwidth limitations within the network that could restrict the fair and equal access to network services of other users.

CWOF Networks are not a Primary source of Internet and should be viewed as an enhancement. not as a replacement to Internet Services. All users are strongly encouraged to have alternative access to Internet Services via Commercial ISP's.

CWOF Networks do not support Commercial Internet Provision or associated Commercial Levels of Service or fees.
